Jenny David founded The David Collection in New
York City in 1990. Having been involved with the American
Craft Museum (now the Museum for Art and Design) for
many years while practicing law, Jenny identified
a lack of representation in the United States of international
artists working in many of the traditional craft media.
Ready to begin a new professional career, Jenny opened
the gallery in a loft in Chelsea, pioneering in what
is recognized today as NYC's premier gallery location.
During the 1990's the collection focused on European
artists who were either just emerging or who had substantial
recognition abroad but not in the United States. The
emphasis was on sculptural work in glass, clay and
metal as well as jewelry.
In the Fall of 1991, within six months of opening
the gallery, The David Collection was invited to participate
in the international New Art Forms show in Chicago,
known today as Sculptural Objects and Functional Arts
(SOFA). SOFA is recognized as the premier international
exposition of handmade work in the United States.
In 2002 The David Collection relocated one hour north
of NYC and changed its focus to international contemporary
studio jewelry. Now a "gallery without walls,"
The David Collection participates annually in SOFA
Chicago and New York, as well as at select private
shows across the country. The collection is also shown
by appointment and through this web site.
The David Collection is recognized internationally
for its representation of the best established and
emerging jewelry artists around the world. Its artists
work in many materials-from traditional fine metals
and precious stones to more unusual and alternative
materials such as paper and material fibers. Representation
today includes more than 25 artists from over a dozen
countries.
